"Conversation" Bowie State University
2025
Created by artist Victor Ekpuk and commissioned for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center at Bowie State University, CONVERSATION (c. 2025) is a monumental glass tile mosaic measuring 18 feet wide by 15 feet high.
The work draws deep inspiration from Nsibidi, an ancient Nigerian system of symbolic communication, to visually reinterpret Dr. King’s legacy of justice, equality, and dialogue.
Fabricated by the renowned Mayer of Munich This mural becomes a bridge—between Africa and America, heritage and innovation, art and academia, transforming the university's walls into a "window" for cultural exchange. More than just a decorative mural, the installation is designed to foster a spirit of empowerment and community building by reflecting the shared values of the university and the public. By bringing traditional African philosophies into public space, students and visitors are invited to engage in a continuous dialogue across generations and cultures. The piece stands as a testament to the power of public art to encourage mutual understanding, reminding observers that meaningful progress begins with the simple yet profound act of listening to one another.
