"Passage to Promise", Dubai Calligraphy Biennale

Victor Ekpuk’s “Passage to Promise”, is a monumental interactive gateway unveiled for the inaugural Dubai Calligraphy Biennale.

Marking the first public sculpture by an African artist in Dubai, the work takes the form of a human-shaped doorway inviting viewers to physically cross a threshold of history and hope. The surface is intricately adorned with Ekpuk’s contemporary reimagining of Nsibidi, an ancient Nigerian ideographic script.

Through this abstract language, Ekpuk creates a visual dialogue between African heritage and Middle Eastern aesthetics, transforming the passage into a meditation on shared cultural memory and collective future.

“Passage to Promise” is currently on view at Al Safa Art & Design Library, Dubai.
