Covers for Chinua Achebe
2016
To mark the 60th anniversary of Things Fall Apart, Penguin Books and the Achebe family commissioned artist Victor Ekpuk to design covers for Chinua Achebe’s reissued classics.
The collaboration highlights a powerful cultural synergy between the ""father of modern African literature"" and Ekpuk’s visual style, which utilizes nsibidi a Nigerian graphic systems.
Though Ekpuk created most of the art prior to the project, both the artist and Achebe family found that Ekpuk's lyrical, symbolic drawings naturally aligned with the author’s themes. This intersection of literature and art was celebrated in a 2018 exhibition at the National Museum of African Art.
